Jade EhlersSinger and sometime actor Max G. Schneider, aka MAX, has a big hit on his hands with his romantic ballad “Lights Down Low.” He thinks the song — which he wrote about his wife and even used to propose to her — has connected with people because it came from his heart, and not out of any desire to write a “hit.”
“I had no foresight of it being this ‘Lights Down Low’-on-the-radio kinda thing….that’s the most amazing part, that it just came from there,” he tells ABC Radio. “And then of course the story of me using it to propose to her…it’s sorta been this through line of just staying true to who we are.”
Max wrote “Lights Down Low” for his debut album, Hell’s Kitchen Angel, and he says it came about because he simply wanted to express his love.
“I think I was really still trying to find my voice, as cliched as it is, and I was writing and writing and writing,” he says of the album process. “And I’d just started dating my now-wife, Emily, and I was in a writing session with a few writers.”
He continues, “I just had this moment where I said, ‘I just wanna write something for this person. I can’t think of [a] catchy hook or any of these things, but…if you guys are down, let’s just dive into this story.'” The writers agreed, and “Lights Down Low” was born.
“Lights Down Low” was first released in October of 2016, but it took a full year for it to finally take off, eventually going Gold. In the meantime, MAX has already managed to finish his sophomore album. There’s no release date yet, but on Friday, he put out a new romantic new single called “Team.”
