Brian ZiffShawn Mendes is honoring his Portuguese heritage and his love of soccer as this year’s FIFA World Cup gets ready to kick off in Russia.
The singer has released a new version of his song “In My Blood,” which will serve as the official song for Portugal’s Football Team. Shawn, who was born in Canada to a Portuguese immigrant father and a British mother, sings in Portuguese for the first time in the new version of the track.
The new part of the chorus translates to, “I will believe/That we are going to make it/That we are going conquer/We are Portugal/A single voice and heart.”
Portugal begins their tournament against Spain on June 15, and you can bet Shawn will be watching.
“I follow Portugal and England because of my parents, who are from the two countries,” Shawn says in a statement. “In the World Cup I’m always cheering for Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my favorite player and probably one of my biggest inspirations.”
