Come learn about the technologies currently being used to explore our oceans, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), human-operated vehicles (HOVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (also known as AUVs or gliders). Test your engineering skills by building and operating your own ROV, and explore the concept of density and how it relates to a glider’s movement. Join our speaker, VIMS professor Donglai Gong, as he explains how AUVs are being used in physical and chemical oceanography to increase knowledge and understanding of our oceans.

Matteo’s fascinating techniques for obtaining his black and white painting effects involve making his own brushes. He will guide you in his free form and style. Bring a water spray bottle, black & white water-based paint, oil pastels, a rg, a carpenter pencil and matt knife. Also a canvas board about 14 x 16. $45 for the day.

GLOUCESTER GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PUBLIC MEETING/LECTURE @ GLOUCESTER PUBLIC LIBRARY

Jay Gaidmore, the Marian and Alan McLeod Director of the Special Collections Research Center in the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, is the guest speaker. His presentation is titled “The Treasures of Special Collections in Swem Library”. Focused on Virginia history, the Center is a major historical repository containing diaries, letters, periodicals, and other records of the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds.
An archivist for over fifteen years, Mr. Gaidmore previously served as a Private Papers Archivist at the Library of Virginia, the University Archivist at Brown University, and the head of University Archives and Records Management Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his M.A. in History from Old Dominion University in 1999, writing his thesis on the Virginia Conservative Party of the 1960’s, extensively using the 20th century political papers at Swem Library. He received a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of South Carolina, where his focus was on digital libraries and electronic records.
The meeting is free and open to the public. A brief business meeting will precede the program.

VINYASA YOGA CLASSES @ Abingdon Elementary

YOGA – Some benefits are improved posture, flexibility, balance & strength as well as calming of your mind & lessening of stress!

For ages 16 & older.

Whether you are new to yoga or experienced, Vinyasa-All Levels is for everyone.

This class links body movement with breath & emphasizes strengthening the core.

Pose modifications & challenges are offered to fit the participant’s experience level.

Starting slowly with warm up stretches, the music takes you to a progressively higher energy level about midway into the class & concludes with a relaxation period.

Instructor: Nancy Sessoms

$30 for 6 week session or $6/individual class, just pay in class.
